Had a nice chat with the parents, they had just come from a visit with Dr. Sosey. They both seemed worried by the "renal thing" as they called it. The doctors use the term CKD, short for Chronic Kidney Disease.
They both sounded tired but happy. They had a really big weekend, with Candis, Eric, and Denver staying with them for the weekend.. The dog was the biggest hit. Dad seemed to really get a kick out of Denver and told the story of how when it was time to leave for Tuscon he didn't want to get in the car to go home, but instead curled around his leg and even barked at Candis. Is it just me, or is there another "Stevie situation" in the making?
In addition to Candis and crew, Sharon, Granny, & Dan were over for a visit on Saturday. Kevin, Melissa, Glenda & Jennifer came by Monday evening. It sounds like a party was going on, with lasagna for dinner and all. BnB enjoyed all the company but it did take it's toll. Dad said that he took his "rests" about 3x a day.
Mom said that they had a rough night last night, with Dad having a headache but only a level 3. I commented that they were such an inspiration how they always stood by each other and worked as a team. Mom remembered that Dad "stood by me when I had my rotocuff surgery" and we talked about what a blessing a marriage can be.
We then launched into some computer talk that I won't bore you all with.
Dad said that he's still doing the treadmill five minutes a day. I asked him if he's navigating the house okay and he said that he was. Sounds like they needed to come to a compromise about the shower. The doctor wanted him to be watch 100% of the time, but that wasn't comfortable and they "hammered out" a solution. Dad just doesn't feel like he has much control in his life right now, and he knows that it needs to be this way, but he'd like a private shower. Sound good to me.
He's still doing his homework, he's got the ABCs mastered and is doing numbers. I asked him what it was like to read a magazine, what did the language look like to him. He said that he recognizes it. Letters and some words, but that he just can't read and that images jump around on the page. Mom did say that he was reading a water color magazine in the bookshop and could make out headlines, a week ago he couldn't do that. I suggested that they read one of the stroke books out loud together. I got the audio version of "the Brain that Changes itself" and I'm enjoying it and learning so much. (see the Information page for a link)
That's all for today. Neurologist appointment is tomorrow, so I know we'll have some interesting news after that.
