Talked to Brenda last night. She and Bob were in good spirits and counting the days/hours down until he can return home. PT is still going extraordinarily well. Today (in OT) Bob was given a subtraction page, which he whipped right through. He is better at subtraction than addition. He also worked on tracing numbers 1-70. Brenda didn't mention any headaches that day.
This afternoon, Bob will make a trip home with Brenda and the physical therapist. The PT wants to see how Bob does getting in & out of the car and getting around the house. He'll give recommendations on what they should do to make sure Bob is safe when he comes home. He's been lectured not to take any chances - above all, be safe, don't overdo it, don't bump your head, etc.
Dr. Ron confirmed that Bob had a "hemorrhagic stroke." Only 10-20% of strokes are this type. They are easier to get over than the other type. Bob will need to be on alert for any symptoms of recurrence, as this can be 50% in the first year. He'll stay on the anti-seizure meds for 6+ months, and on Thursday, B&B will get a list of medications/diet/PT for his outpatient treatment.
The drs. confirmed a kidney problem, which he developed and had begun treatment for prior to the stroke. His kidneys are currently operating at 40%, according to Brenda. They are putting him on a diet of no salt and no dairy/milk. B&B will find out Thursday if he needs to be referred to another dr. for this issue. We are concerned about this and need to find out more information on how to keep it from progressing.
Today will be a big day - going on a field trip home and getting ready for leaving rehab tomorrow. How exciting!
